WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024 - Day 3: Nicaragua, Mexico, Venezuela win in Group B; Puerto Rico, Japan, Italy victorious in Group A - World Baseball Softball Confederation (2024)

Three teams in the tournament still hold a perfect record after three days: Japan and Puerto Rico, who lead Group A, and Nicaragua, who are on top in Group B.

The WBSC U-15Baseball World Cup2024 Opening Round has entered a crucial phase after three days of competition in Barranquilla and Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.

Two teams remain undefeated in Group A after three complete days. Puerto Rico defeated Dominican Republic, 10-4, while Japan beat Colombia, 14-3, in six innings on Sunday. In the other game of the day, Italy were too good for Guam, 13-1, claiming their first win of the tournament to remain in contention for a spot in the Super Round.

In Group B, Nicaragua is the only team unbeaten. On Sunday, they edged the Netherlands, 3-2, and completed their game against South Africa with a 21-1 win to hold a 3-0 record on top of the standings.

Mexico bounced back from Saturday's loss and handed Chinese Taipei their first defeat of the tournament, 5-1. Both teams are second in the group, with a 2-1 record.

Venezuela also clinched their first win, beating South Africa, 11-1. This result ties them with the Netherlands in the standings, and keeps the South Americans in contention for a spot in the Super Round.

Italy earned their first win of the tournament with a five-inning, 13-1 win against Guam in the first game of the day at Edgar Renteria Stadium.Italy racked up 11 hits in the game.

Mattia Angelucci went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored, Patrick Silva went 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and Pablo Suarez scored four times for the winners, leading Italy's offensive effort.

For Guam, Pierce Castro went 1-for-1, scoring his team's only run of the game. Castro's was the first hit of the tournament for Guam.

Christian Tontini earned the win after three innings of work, allowing one hit, one run and two walks, while striking out five.

Italy is now 1-2 in Group A, putting them in contention for a Super Round spot with two games remaining.

Venezuela defeated South Africa 10-0 registering their first win at the WBSC U-15 Baseball World Cup 2024. This was the first game of the third day of action at 11 de Noviembre Stadium in Cartagena.

Manuel Ramirez lead Venezuela from the mound throwing five innings and accepting just four hits and no runs. On the offensive side Andrés Triana with three RBIs had the best performance on the team.

On Monday, Venezuela will play the Netherlands in a key game for a ticket to the Super Round, while South Africa will look for their first win against Chinese Taipei.

A 4-for-5 game by Bradley Rodriguez lifted Puerto Rico over the Dominican Republic, 10-4, to remain undefeated in Group A. Puerto Rico took the lead in the first inning and never looked back.

From the leadoff spot, Adniel Quiles went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, while Valentin Carrasquillo also posted a perfect 3-for-3 game from the plate.

Puerto Rico used three pitchers in the game. Victor Rivera started the game, tossing 3.2 innings while giving up five hits and three runs. Yosniel Rosario tossed 2.1 scoreless innings in relief and earned the win; while Emilio Solivan pitched the seventh inning.

For the Dominican Republic, Starlin de los Santos went 3-for-4.

Puerto Rico remain undefeated in the tournament at 3-0; while the Dominican Republic is now 1-2.

Nicaragua came from behind to beat the Netherlands in one of the best Group B games so far.

Key relief by Gean Carlos Lopez, who pitched three innings, helped Nicaragua secure the win after the team scored once in the fourth and two times in the fifth.

The win helped Nicaragua to improve to 3-0 while Netherlands fell to 1-2 and will play Venezuela in a key game for a Super Round ticket.

A five-RBI night by Japanese third baseman Yuga Arai propelled Japan to a six-inning win over Colombia by a score of 14-3. The hosts took an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first and held it until the third inning, when Japan posted the first of four multi-run innings.

Naru f*ckui started for Japan, pitching 3.2 innings while giving up two hits and a run; while Ren Ota tossed 2.1 frames and surrendered three hits and two runs. Both pitchers racked up two strikeouts. Ota was the winner of the game.

For Colombia, Eber Miranda and Ander Elorriaga went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. They combined for four of the five Colombian hits of the game.

Japan remain on top of the Group A standings with a perfect 3-0 mark, while Colombia lost their second consecutive game and hold now a 1-2 record.

Mexico won a key game to stay alive in the race for the Super Round after defeating Chinese Taipei 5-1 in the last game of the day at the 11 de Noviembre Stadium in Cartagena, Colombia.

Diego Roldan had a great performance from the mound, accepting just one unearned run in five innings, while his teammates gave him good run support with five runs in the first four innings.

Mexico are back in control of their own destiny with a 2-1 record and face Nicaragua on Monday, while Chinese Taipei will do the same against South Africa

Mexico 5 - 1 Chinese Taipei - Boxscore

Bottom 5th - Wei Lin reached on a throwing error by third baseman Alex Tolosa. He reached third and in the same play he scored on a throwing error by first baseman Pedro Salas. Mexico still leading 5-1.

Top 4th - A costly defensive error by shortstop Li-Ya Yu allowed two more runs for Mexico, which take a 5-0 lead in the match.

Top 3rd - Mexico added one with an RBI single by Francisco del Campo to plate Alejandro Gonzalez. Mexico is winning 3-0.

Top 2nd - Francisco Del Campo hit a lead-off double and scored on a single by Alfredo Magaña, who then also scored on a single by Pedro Salas.

Japan 14 - 3 Colombia - Boxscore

Top 6th - Japan strike again with another five-run at bat. They used three hits and three walks to extend their lead to 14-2. A two-run single by Yuga Arai was the highlight of the inning.

Top 5th - Three consecutive walks to open the inning, followed by a throwing error by shortstop Sebastian Cervantes, allowed Japan to cross the plate twice. Japan lead now 9-1.

Top 4th - An two-RBI single by Yuga Arai extended the lead for Japan to 7-1.

Top 3rd - Japan mount a five-run inning and take the lead in the game. A pair of walks put two runners on, and Kei Kawakami tied the game with a single to left field. Sora Nakajima scored the go-ahead run on a grounder, and then Narushi Nakashima with a single (RBI) and Mitsuki Tokura with a long double to left field (two RBIs) extended Japan's lead to 5-1.

Preview - Colombia will take the field again at 7 pm for their third game of the Opening Round, to play superpower Japan. They played for the last time in this age bracket two years ago, with a7-4victory for the Asian squad. Japan lead the standings in Group A with a 2-0 record, while Colombia, 1-1, is coming from a tough loss in extra innings against Puerto Rico.

Netherlands 2 - 3 Nicaragua - Boxscore

Bottom 5th - Nicaragua come from behind in the fifth. A throwing error allowed Johan Saravia to score from first, and then Eddy Coronado came up clutch with a go-ahead RBI single to give his team the lead.

Bottom 4th -Three consecutive walks and a hit by pitch give Nicaragua their first run. However, three grounders kept the Central Americans from scoring more runs. The game is 2-1 for Netherlands.

Top 2nd - Netherlands score once again in their second at bat. A full-count, bases-loaded walk by Raishelnon Ogenia allowed the European squad to extend their lead to 2-0.

Top 1st - Netherlands loaded the bases with no outs with a pair of walks and a single, but only could score once on a sac fly to center field by Fran-Jean Haseth. Nicaragua's reliever Diedrich Rodriguez (who replaced starter Kevin Mesa) escaped the jam with consecutive fly balls to left field. Netherlands lead 1-0.

Top 6th - With two outs, Puerto Rico string together four hits and score two runs to extend their lead to 10-3.

Top 5th - Valentin Carrasquillo singled and then scored on a run-scoring single by Adniel Quiles. Puerto Rico is winning now 8-3.

Bottom 4th - The Dominican Republic lineup come alive and score three. An RBI double by Euniel De la Cruz and a two-run single off the bat of Miguel Grullon put the Dominicans on the scoreboard.

Top 4th - Adniel Quiles and Bradley Rodriguez started the inning with a single, and later scored on a grounder and a sac fly. It-s 7-0 for Puerto Rico.

Top 2nd - A Joseph Mendez lead-off triple ignited a three hit, three run inning for Puerto Rico. A wild pitch, a sac fly and a run-scoring single by Bradley Rodriguez allowed the Boricua team to get a 5-0 lead.

Top 1st - Puerto Rico strike first with a pair of runs. A walk and an error to start the inning put runners on base, leading to a pair of runs on a grounder and a wild pitch. Puerto Rico lead 2-0, and they still don't have a hit in the game.

Top 5th - Nicaragua add three more on four hits to make it 21-1.

Preview - Nicaragua and South Africa will resume yesterday's game in the top of the fifth inning, with Nicaragua leading 18-1.

South Africa 0 - 10 Venezuela - Boxscore

Bottom 5th - Venezuela used three hits to score three runs, including a walk-off single by Camilo Gutierrez, to end the game in five innings by the merci rule.

Bottom 4th - Sebastian Silva drove in Francisco Marquez and Jesus Chavez with a single to left field to extend Venezuela's lead to 7-0.

Bottom 3rd - Venezuela add one more run on the scoreboard. Erinyer Castillo was hit by a pitch, stole second base and moved to third on a fly to right field by Abel Hidalgo. The scored on a sing by Andres Triana. The South Americans lead now 5-0,

Bottom 2nd - Venezuela take a four-run lead. Andres Triana with the RBI single produced the first run, followed by a run-scoring double by Francisco Marquez and a sac fly by Jesus Chavez. Venezuela is leading 4-0.

Top 5th - Italy extend the lead to 13-1 scoring two runs on two hits. Mattia Pasotto hit a RBI single to left field in the inning, it's his first hit of the tournament in two at bats.

Top 3rd - Italy extend their lead to 11-1 with five in the third frame. The European squad sent 10 hittes to the batter's box. The inning ended with a nice 6-4-3 double play by Guam.

Bottom 2nd - Guam score their first run of the game. Pierce Castro led off the inning with a double, moved to third on a wild pitch and then scored on a grounder to first base by Ashtyn Gumataotao, who collects Guam's first RBI of the tournament. The game is now 6-1.

Top 2nd - Italy doubled their lead with three more runs in their second offensive chance. Patrick Silva drove in two with a single to right field, while Pablo Suarez scored on a double-steal play. Italy lead 6-0.

Top 1st - Italy score three runs on three hits to start the game. Federico Magalotti tripled to lead off the game, and scored on a passed ball. Pablo Suarez and Patrick Silva scored on a balk and a wild pitch respectively. Italy get a 3-0 lead.
