Stanford vs. Texas final score, results: Longhorns prevail in pitchers' duel to reach WCWS Final | Sporting News (2024)

Texas' journey to its first national championship is one step closer to the finish line.

The Longhorns got a tough challenge from Stanford on Monday night, as their offense was shut down by NiJaree Canady through six innings. Saving the day was Teagan Kavan, who matched Canady inning-for-inning and was virtually untouchable.

Texas finally broke through against Canady in the seventh inning, but the Longhorns got on the scoreboard in bizarre fashion. A bunt with runners on first and third base was fielded well by the Cardinal, who forced Alyssa Washington into a rundown, but Washington somehow managed to get to home plate before the tag.

The Longhorns weren't able to take further advantage of the opportunity and went to the bottom of the seventh clinging to a one-run lead, but Stanford had virtually no chance against Kavan, who allowed just one hit and one walk over seven shutout innings, striking out seven.

Stanford vs. Texas results, highlights fromWomen's College World Series

(All times Eastern).

8:59 p.m. —Aly Koneshiro pops out, and Texas is going to the Women's College World Series Final! The top-seeded Longhorns are knocking on the door of a championship and will face either Oklahoma or Florida for the title.

8:57 p.m. —Ava Gall grounds out, and now Texas is one out away from advancing.

8:56 p.m. —Kavan strikes out Kyra Chan to open the bottom of the seventh.

8:52 p.m. —Well, Canady gets three balls in the air for three outs. Stanford responded well to that threat, but the run is all the difference right now. The Cardinal come to the plate needing to score for the first time tonight.

8:49 p.m. —Stanford has to feel pretty crushed to see a run score that way, but the Cardinal have work to do to ensure this stays a 1-0 game. Texas still has runners on second and third with nobody out. Bella Dayton, who's shined in the field tonight, is at the plate.

Texas 1, Stanford 0

8:47 p.m. RBI FIELDER'S CHOICE —Woah! Stanford plays the bunt perfectly and throws home, but Alyssa Washington gets into a rundown and wins. She's safe at home, and that call looks like it will stand to give Texas the lead.

8:46 p.m. —Joley Mitchell grounds one past the infield and into left field! Texas is set up with runners on first and third with no one out. This is the best opportunity either team has had today.

8:44 p.m. —Well this has been a whirlwind of a sequence for Taryn Kern, who commits an error to start the seventh inning after ending the sixth on a pitch clock violation. Canady will have to work around this trouble.

End of sixth inning: Texas 0, Stanford 0

8:40 p.m. —A pitch clock violation ends the at-bat for Kern and ends the inning for Stanford. Like Canady, Kavan is through six scoreless innings. We could play all night.

8:34 p.m. —Taryn Kern makes a great play on a line drive and gets the third out of the inning. Just one run in the bottom of the sixth would put all of the pressure on Texas.

8:31 p.m. —Canady quiets Texas' momentum with a strikeout, and she's fired up. Stanford still needs an out to get out of the inning.

8:28 p.m. —A Reese Atwood single with one-out injects some life back into the crowd and gives Texas a chance to break through.

End of fifth inning: Texas 0, Stanford 0

8:23 p.m. —Bella Dayton makes a terrific sliding catch in foul territory to end the fifth. Stanford's offense continues to show no indication of a breakthrough, so the pressure is back on Canady and the pitching staff to keep posting zeros.

— NCAA Softball (@NCAASoftball) June 4, 2024

8:17 p.m. —Wow, Canady is really feeling it now. She strikes out the side and keeps Texas' lineup searching for answers. This game is cruising right along, but it won't end soon unless someone scores a run.

End of fourth inning: Texas 0, Stanford 0

8:10 p.m. —Kavan works around a two-out walk as Stanford's offense continues to show few signs of life.

8:01 p.m. —Canady comes through with a huge strikeout of Joley Mitchell to end the inning. She's unscathed, so far...

7:59 p.m. —A hit-by-pitch puts two on with two out for Texas.

7:53 p.m. —Katie Stewart gets the crowd fired up with a one-out double. Here's Texas' best opportunity yet...

End of third inning: Texas 0, Stanford 0

7:48 p.m. —Kavan only has two strikeouts, but that's all she's needed to comfortably get through the Stanford lineup the first time. We are scoreless through three.

7:46 p.m. —Another two quick outs from Kavan, with the help of a great defensive play. Stanford has barely made a ripple through eight batters.

7:42 p.m. —Canady gets through a scoreless third inning, working around only an infield single. Stanford has gotten exactly what it needed out of Canady early on. The challenge is getting runs on the board and putting real pressure on the Longhorns.

End of second inning: Texas 0, Stanford 0

7:37 p.m. —Kavan induces a double play, so she's faced the minimum through two. This game remains scoreless.

7:33 p.m. —Kavan strikes out Aly Kaneshiro to start the inning, but Jade Berry singles with one out for Stanford's first hit (and baserunner) of the day.

7:29 p.m. —Canady quickly works around the leadoff hit-by-pitch. Texas put the ball in play in that inning, but the contact just wasn't hard enough.

7:25 p.m. —Katie Stewart takes a pitch from Canady off the ankle and heads to first to start the second inning.

End of first inning: Texas 0, Stanford 0

7:22 p.m. —Stanford goes 1-2-3 against Kavan to start the night. We are scoreless through one.

7:20 p.m. —Teagan Kavan picks up two quick outs to start the bottom of the first inning. Scoring runs was expected to be a challenge for Stanford today, and that's what it looks like so far.

7:14 p.m. —NiJaree Canady strikes out Reese Atwood to end the inning and strand Scott. That's the start Stanford was looking for.

7:10 p.m. —Mia Scott comes through with Texas' first hit of the night as she singles with one out.

7:08 p.m. —The night starts with a groundout from Bella Dayton.

7:04 p.m. —We're just a minute or two away from first pitch as Stanford takes aim at an upset.

6:55 p.m. —That line of strong storms has now moved far away from Oklahoma City, so weather shouldn't be a factor tonight unless a smaller storm pops up unexpectedly.

6:30 p.m. —Florida's upset of Oklahoma today and the postponement of their second game to tomorrow means the WCWS Final won't be determined tonight. Texas can be the first to clinch a spot with a win in this game.
